Haven’t had enough of rooftop cinema screenings this summer, or haven’t been to one at all? There’s still some time to fix this watch a film as the sun sets over London – check out our favourite options curated by the Rooftop Film club and John Lewis/Samsung team below.
Rooftop Film Club has been a popular choice for those who want to combine staying outdoors with their favourite films – watching a film a couple of feet above the ground as the sunset descends over the city is an added cinematic benefit. This year, their events in August have been taking place in three venues: Peckham’s Bussey Building, Rooftop East in Stratford and Queen of Hoxton.
From recent flicks, such as La La Land, Whitney, Ladybird or The Shape of Water, to timeless masterpieces like Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Goodfellas, beloved romcoms such as Pretty Woman, Four Weddings and a Funeral or Notting Hill, as well as coming-of-age classics Clueless, Mean Girls, The Breakfast Club or Heathers, the choice is broad indeed. There’s even a series of dedicated screenings celebrating women in film curated by Appropriate Behaviour’s Desiree Akhavan, and a preview of her new film The Miseducation of Cameron Post.
There’s something to see every day, so everyone is likely to find their daily fix of cinema on the roof! Ticket prices start at £15. The full list and bookings are available here. You can pick a standard seat or a package with bottomless popcorn and a bottle of prosecco.
Would you rather sing along to your favourite musicals? John Lewis has partnered with Samsung for a Sunset Cinema series that will take place every Wednesday on Oxford Street through August and September. The place has hosted an array of events already and runs cocktail masterclasses bi-weekly, but its feel-good movie line-up will allow the fans to sing along to their favourite soundtracks. The list is rather impressive and includes Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Grease or Dirty Dancing. Before the show, you can grab a rooftop dinner at Nanny Bills pop-up, catering to every dietary preference.
The film screening schedule for the upcoming two weeks includes:
8 August – La La Land
15 August – Mamma Mia!
22 August – Bugsy Malone
29 August – Chicago
5 September – Footloose
12 September – Dirty Dancing
19 September – Dreamgirls
26 September – Grease
All screenings start at 6pm. You can book your tickets and explore other events here (£15 per ticket with complimentary popcorn and a goody bag).
