Lights of Soho, a members club and a popular light-art gallery, opens the new exhibition, Be Illuminated! to public. They’re about to light it up with a handful of works by Roger Taylor.
For eight weeks, the art gallery will display the works of a self-taught artist Roger Taylor, also known as Papi, who experiments with light in his artworks. Having started as an actor, training in New York at Lee Strasbourg Theatre Institute, he found his real calling in fine arts. He moved onto working as a creative director for some of the city’s best nightclubs. He created the light sets for their weekly shows before moving to Manchester a couple of years ago, where he set up his own design studio.
Papi collaborated with several street artists – including Pegasus, who’s recently created a handful of pieces for Amy Winehouse street trail in Camden. Exhibited around the world, he’s returning to London: he’s had a handful of shows here over the past two years.
Although he uses a traditional approach to sculpting metal, he combines his art with light, creating unusual mixed media artworks. That’s why the pieces he creates are either one-offs or limited to seven pieces.
His art bears references to tattoos – with an abundance of mermaids, butterflies, and hearts. This time, his illuminated artworks will be tied into the theme of the vibrancy of the area – at the very heart of Soho. Have your Instagram at the ready.
“In 2016 we showcased Papi’s angel wings and they took social media by storm,” said Hamish Jenkinson, Curator at Lights of Soho. “This year Papi is back with a full show and I cannot wait for him to transform the gallery into a fairy-tale land with mermaids, exotic animals, angels and more light splendour.”
Be Illuminated! will be available to view from 30th March to 13th May 2017 at Lights of Soho.
Lights of Soho, 35 Brewer Street, London, W1F 0RX. Opening times: Monday – Sunday 11 am – 6 pm, members only from 6 pm – midnight.
